Not only humans, CBD can also be used for animals with epileptic seizures, especially our home pets. In this article, I will discuss using CBD oil for dog seizures. It is estimated that about 1-5% of dogs may suffer from epilepsy.
Symptoms of epilepsy in dogs
The causes of epilepsy symptoms in quadrupeds can be divided into symptomatic and idiopathic. The former is usually caused by adverse changes in the central nervous system due to the pathological effect of many factors, including brain inflammation caused by viral or bacterial origin, injuries in the head or toxins intoxication, e.g. heavy metals.
However, in the case of idiopathic epilepsy, it is very difficult to clearly determine the cause of seizures or epilepsy, although the genetic background of this type of epilepsy is very possible. It is widely known that certain breeds of dogs are genetically prone to epilepsy, including beagle dogs, German shepherds, Keeshond, Belgian shepherd dogs, Dachshunds, Hungarian Vizslas, English springer spaniels, Irish wolfhounds, and Collies. See dogtime for more information about dog breeds.
Dogs prone to severe seizures
Particularly severe seizures occur in golden retriever dogs, Irish setter, cocker spaniel, rough-haired fox terrier, Alaskan malamute, Siberian Husky, Labrador retriever, miniature schnauzer, mastiff, boxer, and poodle.
Using Barbiturates for dog seizures
Anti-epileptic therapy in dogs is based on the use of potent drugs (i.e.from the group of barbiturates). Dog owners have reported that barbiturates aren’t that much effective in treating dog seizures. In addition, there may be serious side effects in the form of substance dependency, apathy, confusion or problems with motor coordination in animals.
Using Cannabidiols CBD Oil For Dog Seizures
The efficacy of cannabidiol (CBD) in the treatment of epilepsy has been confirmed in clinical trials involving humans, and earlier on the animal model (mainly rodents). Some owners of sick dogs give their pets CBD oil (usually solo), although it happens that cannabidiol oil supplements the basic therapy.
From the accounts of people using CBD oil for their dog seizures, it appears that after using CBD oil, their pets’ health improved.
That being said, we still do not have enough scientific data on the use of cannabinoids in animals (dogs), especially domestic pets. Determining the appropriate dose and frequency of its administration results only from the personal experience of the owners. Hence, collecting information from dog owners also allows assessing the safety of CBD use, as well as the effectiveness of administering this substance over a longer period of time.
How much CBD oil should be administered?
It is usually recommended to start therapy from the lowest doses. One drop of Cannapol No1 oil contains about 2 mg of CBD.
An example of a dosing schedule
A single dose, 0.5 mg CBD / 1 kg body weight of the dog should be initially administered once a day. If the health condition of the dog doesn’t improve after a few days, the frequency of administration within 24 hours should be gradually increased to a maximum of 3-4 administrations per day, i.e. regularly every 8 and 6 hours.
The subject of treating epilepsy in dogs using CBD oil is truly fascinating. Apparently, CBD will help to improve your dog’s epileptic seizures based on the evidence from clinical trials and owners of sick dogs.
